Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems, and the ecological complexes of which they are part. Genetic Diversity. Biodiversity Factsheet.

The Hills and Fleurieu contain a diversity of native plants and animals. Biodiversity means the variety of life, including how that life is organised and associated ecological processes. The variety of life includes plants, animals, fungi, bacteria and micro-organisms.

Forests are critical habitats for biodiversity and they are also essential for the provision of a wide range of ecosystem services that are important to human well-being. There is increasing evidence that biodiversity contributes to forest ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services. Here we provide a review of forest ecosystem services including biomass production, habitat provisioning services, pollination, seed dispersal, resistance to wind storms, fire regulation and mitigation, pest regulation of native and invading insects, carbon sequestration, and cultural ecosystem services, in relation to forest type, structure and diversity. We also consider relationships between forest biodiversity and multifunctionality, and trade-offs among ecosystem services.

Biodiversity loss

Biodiversity loss includes the extinction of species plant or animal worldwide, as well as the local reduction or loss of species in a certain habitat , resulting in a loss of biological diversity. Global extinction is being driven by human activities which overreach beyond the planetary boundaries as part of the Anthropocene and has so far been proven to be irreversible. Even though permanent global species loss is a more dramatic and tragic phenomenon than regional changes in species composition , even minor changes from a healthy stable state can have dramatic influence on the food web and the food chain insofar as reductions in only one species can adversely affect the entire chain coextinction , leading to an overall reduction in biodiversity , possible alternative stable states of an ecosystem notwithstanding. Ecological effects of biodiversity are usually counteracted by its loss. Reduced biodiversity in particular leads to reduced ecosystem services and eventually poses an immediate danger for food security , but also can have more lasting public health consequences for humans.

It is evident to any biologist that small-bodied species within a given higher taxon order, class, phylum, etc. Hence small-bodied species are generally more abundant than large-bodied species. We analyzed large herbivore species data collected in Kenyan rangelands. An index of biological diversity derived from the negative relation between animal species body size and its local abundance is proposed. The results show a consistently strong positive relation between the new diversity index and species abundances. The proposed diversity index has the advantage of incorporating information on species abundances without the need for time-consuming surveys. Biodiversity includes not only the world's species with their unique evolutionary histories, but also genetic variability within and among populations of species and the distribution of species across local habitats, ecosystems, landscapes, and whole continents or oceans. Understanding what constitutes and defines biodiversity is essential for managers and policy-makers who must attempt to incorporate its values into their land- and water-management plans. It is only when we understand all the interacting scientific dimensions of biodiversity outlined in this chapter that we can appreciate the levels of information that must be considered. Biodiversity-management options are inevitably constrained by a combination of biological and sociopolitical realities. In this chapter, we present our biological understanding of biodiversity, which provides the basis for further chapters 3 and 4 , which consider the "uses" and "value" of biodiversity.

Base your answer on the information below and accompanying graph and on your knowledge of biology. On a global scale, biodiversity is being lost at an alarming rate, largely due to habitat destruction. This is an totally easy means to specifically get lead by on-line. Applying biodiversity conservation research in practice Date: November 12, Source: University of Vienna Summary: One million species are threatened with extinction, many of them already in. For example,.

Biodiversity is the variety of life. It can be studied on many levels. At the highest level, one can look at all the different species on the entire Earth. On a much smaller scale, one can study biodiversity within a pond ecosystem or a neighborhood park. Identifying and understanding the relationships between all the life on Earth are some of the greatest challenges in science.

Although all of these insects have a similar structure and may be genetic cousins, the beautiful variety of colors, shapes, camouflage, and sizes showcase the level of diversity possible even within a closely-related group of species. Biodiversity is a term used to describe the enormous variety of life on Earth. Biodiversity refers to every living thing, including plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. Scientists have estimated that there are around 8. However, only around 1.
