Frederick E. Hoxie, one of our most prominent and celebrated academic historians of Native American history, has for years asked his undergraduate students at the beginning of each semester to write down the names of three American Indians. The Lewis and Clark expedition, the fur trade, Manifest Destiny, wagon trains rolling across the plains to Oregon and California, Indian wars, cattle drives, and railroad-building all represent chapters in a story familiar, at least in its broad outlines and as popularized by Hollywood, to most Americans. A specialist in U. Hoxie came to the University of Illinois in from the Newberry Library, a private research library in Chicago, where he had served as vice president for research and education. At the Newberry, he developed programs for scholars, students and teachers that promoted the study of the Native American past and administered an internationally-acclaimed research and fellowship program for scholars in all fields. These programs were supported by a variety of foundations and government agencies, including the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Hoxie received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College in and his Ph. He taught at Antioch College from , and from was an adjunct professor of history at Northwestern University. The book grew out of an exhibit of the same name, curated by Hoxie, which is currently on a twelve-city national tour.
