The muscles of the face

Human muscle system , the muscles of the human body that work the skeletal system , that are under voluntary control, and that are concerned with movement, posture, and balance. Broadly considered, human muscle—like the muscles of all vertebrates—is often divided into striated muscle or skeletal muscle , smooth muscle , and cardiac muscle. Smooth muscle is under involuntary control and is found in the walls of blood vessels and of structures such as the urinary bladder , the intestines , and the stomach. Cardiac muscle makes up the mass of the heart and is responsible for the rhythmic contractions of that vital pumping organ; it too is under involuntary control. With very few exceptions, the arrangement of smooth muscle and cardiac muscle in humans is identical to the arrangement found in other vertebrate animals. This article is concerned with the skeletal muscles of the human body, with emphasis on muscle movements and the changes that have occurred in human skeletal musculature as a result of the long evolutionary process that involved the assumption of upright posture.

This chapter gives an overview of the important structures, muscles, fasciae , and vessels arteries , veins , lymph , nerves of the head and neck region. The brain , one of the most important organs, is protected by the skull , both of which are covered in other articles. There are also individual articles for the organs of perception as well as for the thyroid gland , the salivary glands, teeth and oral cavity. The head and neck region is the beginning of the respiratory and digestive tract, both of which also have their own articles.

Overview of the head and neck region

The muscles of the head and neck perform many important tasks, including movement of the head and neck, chewing and swallowing, speech, facial expressions, and movement of the eyes. These diverse tasks require both strong, forceful movements and some of the fastest, finest, and most delicate adjustments in the entire human body. The muscles of the face are unique among groups of muscles in the body. While most muscles connect to and move only bones, facial muscles mostly connect bones to skin. These muscles, including the masseter and temporalis, elevate the jaw forcefully during chewing and gently during speech. An extensive complement of tightly interlaced muscles allows the tongue a range of complex movements for chewing and swallowing, as well as the important function of producing speech. Of these, four extrinsic muscle sets connecting the tongue to the surrounding bones move the tongue in virtually any direction, with fine shape changes such as for speech the province of the four intrinsic tongue muscles.

PDF | The facial muscles are striated muscles that attach to the bones of the skull to perform important functions for daily life including.

Muscles of Facial Expression

Facial Muscles: The Facial Muscles, and in particular those in the lips, help to shape the sound and air stream into recognizable speech. Visible in this image click on it , these muscles move the face in response to our thoughts, feelings, emotions and impulses. Actors work very carefully to learn how to isolate each muscle.

By contracting, the muscles pull on the skin and exert their effects. They are the only group of muscles that insert into skin. These muscles have a common embryonic origin — the 2nd pharyngeal arch. They migrate from the arch, taking their nerve supply with them.

By Juan L. Proprioception is a quality of somatosensibility that informs the central nervous system about the static and dynamics of muscles and joints. In muscles, the proprioceptive originates in the specialized sensory-organ-denominated muscle spindles. Nevertheless, facial muscles lack muscle spindles, but the facial proprioception plays key roles in the regulation and coordination of facial musculature and diverse reflexes.
