Gentrification is a powerful force for economic change in our cities, but it is often accompanied by extreme and unnecessary cultural displacement.

Gentrification is a process of changing the character of a neighborhood through the influx of more affluent residents and businesses. Gentrification often increases the economic value of a neighborhood, but the resulting demographic change is frequently a cause of controversy. The gentrification process is typically the result of increasing attraction to an area by people with higher incomes spilling over from neighboring cities, towns, or neighborhoods. Further steps are increased investments in a community and the related infrastructure by real estate development businesses, local government, or community activists and resulting economic development , increased attraction of business, and lower crime rates. In addition to these potential benefits, gentrification can lead to population migration and displacement.

Yet it is still unclear how economic and cultural dynamics mutually influence each other. By contrast, that has been extensively studied in the case of individuals. Over decades, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu showed that people's success and their positions in society mainly depend on how much they can spend their economic capital and what their interests are their cultural capital. For the first time, we adapt Bourdieu's framework to the city context. We operationalize a neighborhood's cultural capital in terms of the cultural interests that pictures geo-referenced in the neighborhood tend to express.

Consuming heritage: counter-uses of the city and gentrification. Based on research in the old Recife Quarter in the city of Recife, capital of Pernambuco state, Brazil, this study examines processes of gentrification in areas of heritage value. The article focuses on the way in which these urban policies have transformed cultural heritage into a commodity, and urban space into social relationships mediated by consumerism. I argue that heritage sites that undergo processes of gentrification create strong spatial segregation and generate an appropriation of space by the excluded population that takes the form of counter-uses, undermining the uses imagined by urban and heritage policy makers. Keywords: consumption, gentrification, heritage, counter-uses. The architectural and urban interventions known as gentrification still arouse numerous conceptual controversies.

Is it possible that the gentrification has become rather a bourgeois concept? However, this question appears less risible when we consider the stances adopted by a number of geographers and sociologists in the media or when consulted by urban-planning agencies. The same argument can be found in each of these contributions, namely that the increased or renewed attractiveness of certain working-class neighbourhoods among better-off categories of residents, retail entrepreneurs and property developers should not be feared for its effects — such as eviction or marginalisation — on the local population and on existing activities, but rather viewed as a source of opportunities to be seized. In order to prevent an irreversible loss of built heritage, accepting measured gentrification can be a solution. This helps to protect heritage.

Gentrification: Culture and Capital in the Urban Core

The article presents a case history of a gentrifying neighborhood, with special reference to the interplay between cultural artifacts and the forces of the political economy. In Boerum Hill, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, newly arriving middle-class homeowners used various political and cultural methods, including changes in nomen-clature, house tours, manipulation of boundaries and an attempt to secure historic landmark status, in order to enforce their definition of what the neighborhood should be. A countermovement then emerged on the part of older residents, who, using a different set of cultural referents based on the notion of ethnic pride , sought to enforce a different definition. Moreover, as the notion of neighborhood has become increasingly politically salient in recent years, the author suggests that cultural conflicts over the definition of neighborhoods have become a feature of urban politics.

The process of gentrification in recent times has ventured beyond the inner city into territories that are not accounted for in the conventional wisdom associated with the phenomenon. Such has been the case of gentrification in Mulund, a suburb of Mumbai in India, where the occurrence of gentrification challenges the traditional understanding of the process. Mulund once used to be an industrial suburb where engineering and pharmaceutical industries were operational.
