After reading a nonfiction passage, students will use a graphic organizer to display their understanding of the main idea and three key supporting details. This product contains two passages and a teaching poster that explains the ice cream cone analogy! For each passage, the students have to read the passage and then determine the main idea and three supporting details. They write their statements beside the ice cream cone main idea and scoops of ice cream supporting details. Many students have difficulties identifying main ideas in nonfiction texts. In order to understand and express the main idea of a passage, the reader must not only comprehend the text but also make connections within the content and find overarching ideas. To further complicate the process, the reader may also have to recognize and disregard nonessential information. So while this identifying main ideas may come simply and naturally to good readers, it is actually a two or three step process and struggling readers may trip up on any one of those steps. Students can often struggle to extract the main idea from a key text. When they do, it's difficult and frustrating! And watching them struggle is even more frustrating! Especially when you consider that many of the worksheets available for these 2nd-8th grade students are very similar and start to get boring over time.
