Brain Anatomy and Artificial Intelligence

The brain is a fascinating and complex organ. It is responsible for senses, movement and control, emotions and feelings, language and communication, thinking and memory. Research of the brain and understanding the inner workings of the brain will help us to learn about the mechanisms of certain neurological conditions, including hydrocephalus. Increasing our own knowledge of the brain helps us understand our own bodies better and helps us have informed conversations with our doctors, be it as a patient or a caregiver. To celebrate BAW we present a two-part blog to increase our understanding of the brain and how the brain is impacted by hydrocephalus. We hope you enjoy these blogs and find them both informative and useful. This global coalition of BAW partners includes more than universities, K schools, hospitals, patient groups, museums, government agencies, services organizations, and professional associations.

A brain is an organ that serves as the center of the nervous system in all vertebrate and most invertebrate animals. It is located in the head , usually close to the sensory organs for senses such as vision. It is the most complex organ in a vertebrate's body. In a human, the cerebral cortex contains approximately 14—16 billion neurons , [1] and the estimated number of neurons in the cerebellum is 55—70 billion. These neurons typically communicate with one another by means of long fibers called axons , which carry trains of signal pulses called action potentials to distant parts of the brain or body targeting specific recipient cells.

The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. The two hemispheres are separated by a groove called the interhemispheric fissure. Each hemisphere of the cerebrum is divided into broad regions called lobes. Each lobe is associated with different functions:.

It also integrates sensory impulses and information to form perceptions, thoughts, and memories. The brain gives us self-awareness and the ability to speak and move in the world. Its four major regions make this possible: The cerebrum , with its cerebral cortex, gives us conscious control of our actions. The diencephalon mediates sensations, manages emotions, and commands whole internal systems. The cerebellum adjusts body movements, speech coordination, and balance, while the brain stem relays signals from the spinal cord and directs basic internal functions and reflexes.

The Central Nervous System

The cerebrum, which lies in front or on top of the brainstem, comprises a large portion of the brain. The cerebrum is the newest structure in the phylogenetic sense, with mammals having the largest and most developed among all species. The cerebrum contains the cerebral cortex of the two cerebral hemispheres , as well as several subcortical structures, including the hippocampus, basal ganglia, and olfactory bulb.

The nervous system is a complex network of nerves and nerve cells neurons that carry signals or messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to different parts of the body. It is made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord.

Anatomy and physiology of the nervous system

The brain carries out cognitive learning and processing by performing combinations of different types of information processes. Types of information processes are performed by different anatomical structures and implemented in physiology.

The Human Brain: Anatomy and Function

The brain is an amazing three-pound organ that controls all functions of the body, interprets information from the outside world, and embodies the essence of the mind and soul. Intelligence, creativity, emotion, and memory are a few of the many things governed by the brain. Protected within the skull, the brain is composed of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The brain receives information through our five senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing - often many at one time.

The brain and the spinal cord are the central nervous system, and they represent the main organs of the nervous system. The spinal cord is a single structure, whereas the adult brain is described in terms of four major regions: the cerebrum, the diencephalon, the brain stem, and the cerebellum. The regulation of homeostasis is governed by a specialized region in the brain. The coordination of reflexes depends on the integration of sensory and motor pathways in the spinal cord. The iconic gray mantle of the human brain, which appears to make up most of the mass of the brain, is the cerebrum [link]. The wrinkled portion is the cerebral cortex , and the rest of the structure is beneath that outer covering. There is a large separation between the two sides of the cerebrum called the longitudinal fissure.
