Feminist critiques and reformulations of rights are examined. Arguments are made for limiting the reach of law and legalistic thinking, rather than imagining that law is the suitable model for all thinking about morality. The chapter explains how the ethics of care has the resources for dealing with power and violence, and should not be built on idealized images of family peace and harmony.

Ethics of care , also called care ethics , feminist philosophical perspective that uses a relational and context-bound approach toward morality and decision making. The term ethics of care refers to ideas concerning both the nature of morality and normative ethical theory. The ethics of care perspective stands in stark contrast to ethical theories that rely on principles to highlight moral actions—such as Kantian deontology , utilitarianism , and justice theory—and is not meant to be absolute and incontrovertible.

Jus post bellum comes in many forms and variations. One of the main shortcomings in existing discourse is the lack of engagement with the interplay between law and morality. Like the laws of war , and the law on the use of force and intervention , jus post bellum is grounded in both moral e. The two are often portrayed as in conflict with each other. Lawyers have typically remained skeptical of the role of morality and ethics in their theorization of jus post bellum, partly based on risks of instrumentalization and abuse of authority. For centuries, discourse on jus post bellum has been dominated by claims over rights and duties of victorious states, entitlements after war and post-war justice.

Normatively, care ethics seeks to maintain relationships by contextualizing and promoting the well-being of care-givers and care-receivers in a network of social relations. It builds on the motivation to care for those who are dependent and vulnerable, and it is inspired by both memories of being cared for and the idealizations of self. Following in the sentimentalist tradition of moral theory, care ethics affirms the importance of caring motivation, emotion and the body in moral deliberation, as well as reasoning from particulars. Critics fault care ethics with being a kind of slave morality, and as having serious shortcomings including essentialism, parochialism, and ambiguity. Although care ethics is not synonymous with feminist ethics, much has been written about care ethics as a feminine and feminist ethic, in relation to motherhood, international relations, and political theory. Care ethics is widely applied to a number of moral issues and ethical fields, including caring for animals and the environment, bioethics, and more recently public policy. Originally conceived as most appropriate to the private and intimate spheres of life, care ethics has branched out as a political theory and social movement aimed at broader understanding of, and public support for, care-giving activities in their breadth and variety.

Care Ethics

Applying Care Ethics to Business is a multidisciplinary collection of original essays that explores the intersection between the burgeoning field of care ethics and business. Care ethics is an approach to morality that emphasizes relational, particularist, and affective dimensions of morality that evolved from feminist theory and today enjoys robust intellectual exploration. Care ethics emerged out of feminist theory in the 's and the greatest contribution to moral analysis among Women' Studies scholars. Today, feminists and non-feminist scholars are increasingly taking care ethics seriously.

This chapter continues the discussion on universalizability in moral theory. It defends the ethics of care against the presumed requirement of dominant moral theories that universal principles of impartiality and reason must always be accorded priority over partial attachments. It defends the ethics of care against feminist critiques that hold that it attends insufficiently to equality for women.

The ethics of care is an alternative ethical perspective which prioritizes particular relationships and their attendant responsibilities. It is often contrasted with traditional ethical theories which emphasize general rules and individual rights. Early formulations of the ethics of care, such as those offered by Carol Gilligan and Nel Noddings , were criticized for reinforcing damaging stereotypes of women and for limiting the scope of moral concern to those with whom we have a personal relationship.
