The application of ferroelectric materials i. The recent successful application of inorganic and hybrid perovskite structured materials e. Critical analysis is complemented with first-principles calculation of the underlying electronic structure.

Reviewed: August 1st Published: October 3rd Ferroelectrics and Their Applications. Ferroelectricity is a symptom of inevitable electrical polarisation changes in materials without external electric field interference. Ferroelectricity is a phenomenon exhibited by crystals with a spontaneous polarisation and hysteresis effects associated with dielectric changes when an electric field is given.

Ferroelectric Materials and Their Applications

This book presents the basic physical properties, structure, fabrication methods and applications of ferroelectric materials. The ferroelectric materials described in this book include a relatively complete list of practical and promising ferroelectric single crystals, bulk ceramics and thin films. Included are perovskite-type, lithium niobate, tungsten-bronze-type, water-soluable crystals and other inorganic materials, as well as organic ferroelectrics polymers, liquid crystals, and composites. Basic concepts, principles and methods for the physical property characteristics of ferroelectric materials are introduced in the first two chapters for those readers new to the subject of ferroelectricity. Not only professional researchers and engineers but also students and other readers who have limited physical knowledge and an interest in ferroelectrics, will welcome this book.

Ferroelectricity was experimentally discovered one hundred years ago, spurring research on its fundamental properties and potential applications.

These include ferroelectric hysteresis used in nonvolatile memories , high permittivities used in capacitors , high piezoelectric effects used in sensors, actuators and resonant wave devices such as radio-frequency filters , high pyroelectric coefficients used in infra-red detectors , strong electro-optic effects used in optical switches and anomalous temperature coefficients of resistivity used in electric-motor overload-protection circuits. This chapter gives an account of the basic theories behind the ferroelectric effect and the main ferroelectric material classes, discussing how their properties are related to their composition and the different ways they are made. Finally, it reviews the major applications for this class of materials, relating the ways in which their key functional properties affect those of the devices in which they are exploited. Ferroelectric materials, because of their robust spontaneous electrical polarization, are widely used in various applications. Recent advances in modelling, synthesis and characterization techniques are spurring unprecedented advances in the study of these materials. In this Review, we focus on thin-film ferroelectric materials and, in particular, on the possibility of controlling their properties through the application of strain engineering in conventional and unconventional ways. We explore how the study of ferroelectric materials has expanded our understanding of fundamental effects, enabled the discovery of novel phases and physics, and allowed unprecedented control of materials properties. We discuss several exciting possibilities for the development of new devices, including those in electronic, thermal and photovoltaic applications, and transduction sensors and actuators.
