Harshbarger received both teaching and advising awards. At Georgia Southern University, he taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics, developed five new mathematics courses, and created the mathematics component for a new doctoral degree.

Harshbarger was named Professor of the Year in Lisa Yocco received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Augusta State University and her graduate degree in mathematics education from Florida State University. She has taught at both the college level and the high school level for twenty years, with her most recent experience at Georgia Southern University. She has co-authored several manuals in mathematics and graphing calculators and has presented workshops and papers at numerous conferences.

In addition to her textbook writing and teaching, she enjoys spending time with her three children, cooking, and working on interior decorating. We're sorry! We don't recognize your username or password.

Mathematics from Classroom to Career College Algebra in Context, Fifth Edition is ideal for students majoring in business, social sciences, and life sciences. Also available with MyMathLab MyMathLab is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with this text to engage students and improve results. About the Book Real-Data Applications, many of which are new or updated in this edition, keep the text up-to-date with recent economic and financial changes.

Applications, the hallmark feature of this text, are written to prepare students to solve problems in their future courses and varied careers. Each section begins with a motivational problem that presents a real-life scenario. The problem is solved after the necessary skills are presented in that section. Special business and finance models are included to demonstrate the applications of functions to the business world.

Group Activities and Extended Applications encourage communication skills and collaborative learning by asking students to apply their knowledge in creative ways. Chapter openers begin with a brief application that shows how the upcoming material relates to the real world. To motivate the students to read the text, each chapter opener also includes a list of applications students will see in each section. Each Algebra Toolbox begins with a list of Key Concepts, just like the sections in the book, to make this tool even more useful for students.

Key Concepts are outlined at the beginning of every section. These lists are consistent with the order and organization of the material in the chapter reviews, providing a helpful cross-reference for exam preparation. Skills Check problems precede the exercise sets, allowing students to quickly check if they have read and understood all the concepts needed to complete their homework. Exercise sets are designed to test student comprehension by incorporating the algebraic skills covered in the Skills Check with the application problems they will encounter in the real world.

Chapter review material includes a wealth of resources to help students study efficiently. A chapter summary and grid outline Key Concepts and Formulas , which are organized by section and point back to the Key Concepts list at the beginning of each section.

The exercise sets are fashioned for students majoring in business, social sciences, and life sciences. Exercise sets incorporate modeling techniques, application problems, and real data.

Learning aids in the exercises—Help Me Solve This, View an Example, and wrong-answer feedback—offer extra support for students who need help remembering definitions and explaining processes. Author-designated sample homework problems are available in MyMathLab to make your start-up time efficient.

Refresh Skills : Students who need help with prerequisite content are supported when and where they need it. Getting Ready assignments are available at the start of each chapter to refresh the algebra skills needed to learn the new material. Getting Ready assignments are available in both quiz and homework format. Guided Visualizations bring mathematical concepts to life. These animated figures help students visualize the concepts through directed explorations and purposeful manipulation.

Guided Visualizations are assignable in MyMathLab and encourage active learning, critical thinking, and conceptual learning. The Note-taking Guide is a workbook that provides a framework for students as they take notes for this course. Students have a guide to help them organize definitions, examples, and processes. The guide is available for download in MyMathLab and also as a print supplement.

MyMathLab with Integrated Review is a new course option that includes embedded review of prerequisite topics from previous courses. Bring struggling students up to speed without using valuable class time on review. Resources include skill-check quizzes, personalized homework, review worksheets, and videos.

Narrated Example Videos have been updated to reflect new content and current real data. Introductory Videos contain a brief overview of the topics covered in each section and highlight objectives and key concepts. These videos give context to the Narrated Example videos. New to This Edition. Content Updates More than additional algebra skills examples and applied exercises have been added to this edition.

Real data has been updated or replaced in nearly all of the examples and exercises, keeping the applications current for this edition.

Appendix B has been updated to include instructions for Excel and Excel More specific Excel step s are presented within the text, with references to Appendix B for more details. Excel procedures are given to solve additional types of problems, especially in investment applications in Chapter 5. Additional modeling problems that involve decision making and critical thinking have been added throughout the text.

The discussion of Aligning Data was moved to Section 1. The discussion of Difference Quotients in Section 1. A new subsection, Rounding Function Coefficients and Constants, which includes a discussion of significant digits, was added to the Chapter 2 Algebra Toolbox. A new subsection, Equations in Quadratic Form, was added to Section 4. A summary table of Transformations of Graphs was added to Section 5. New graphing calculator and Excel instructions and examples are given for solving investment problems in Section 5.

Instructions and examples, using Excel to perform matrix operations, have been added in Section 7. Instructions and examples, using Excel to solve systems of linear equations with inverse matrices, have been added in Section 7. A new Section 7. A new Section 8. Basic Graphing Calculator Guide B. College Algebra can stay on its current path of a technique-driven curriculum. In this case, techniques are emphasized and applications or problems are chosen that are susceptible to the specific technique. Data shows this approach is unsuccessful in attracting students who have other choices or encouraging students to proceed on to calculus. Or, College Algebra can become problem-based quantitative mathematics. In the latter case, the curriculum-design task is choosing generic problems and the mathematical techniques needed to solve them.

This text bridges the gap between traditional and reform approaches to algebra encouraging students to see mathematics in context. It presents fewer topics in greater depth, prioritizing data analysis as a foundation for mathematical modeling, and emphasizing the verbal, numerical, graphical and symbolic representations of mathematical concepts as well as connecting mathematics to real life situations drawn from the students' majors.
