The chemical bond is a still mysterious force that glues atoms together to form molecules and materials. Unlike conventional electromagnetic interactions, the chemical bond cannot be quantified in strength by any known property of the participating species. Here we report an extraordinary principle that the bond energy E AB , a quantitative measure of the bond strength, can be decoupled into two contributions of the participating reactants, with each described by a characteristic complex quantity :. Such a principle has been verified by more than typical bonds, including covalent bonds in molecules and adsorption bonds on metal surfaces; and it can be applied in a wide range of chemical research. Particularly, the characteristic complex quantity, termed chemical amplitude in the present work, can serve as an accurate and unified descriptor for the chemical reactivity of both molecules and metal surfaces, which greatly benefits the study of heterogeneous catalysis. Our finding has not only enabled a direct and practical evaluation of the bond energy, but also revealed a new aspect of the chemical interaction.

Heterogeneous catalysis is one of the fastest developing branches of chemistry. Moreover, it is strongly connected to popular environment-related applications. Owing to the very fast changes in this field, for example, numerous discoveries in nanoscience and nanotechnologies, it is believed that an update of the literature on heterogeneous catalysis could be beneficial. This review not only covers the new developments of heterogeneous catalysis in environmental sciences but also touches its historical aspects. A short introduction to the mechanism of heterogeneous catalysis with a small section on advances in this field has also been elaborated. In the first part, recent innovations in the field of catalytic air, water, wastewater and soil treatment are presented, whereas in the second part, innovations in the use of heterogeneous catalysis for obtaining sustainable energy and chemicals are discussed. Catalytic processes are ubiquitous in all branches of chemistry and there are still many unsolved issues concerning them.

It is therefore essential that all chemists and chemical engineers have an understanding of the fundamental principles as well as the applications of heterogeneous catalysts. This book introduces the subject, starting at a basic level, and includes sections on adsorption and surface science, catalytic kinetics, experimental methods for preparing and studying heterogeneous catalysts, as well as some aspects of the design of industrial catalytic reactors. It ends with a chapter that covers a range of examples of important catalytic processes. The book leads the student to carrying out a series of "tasks" based on searches of the internet and also on the use of web-based search tools such as Scopus or Web of Science.

Despite the indisputable success of conventional approaches to manipulate the performance of heterogeneous catalysts by tuning the composition and structure of active sites, future research on catalysis engineering will likely go beyond the catalyst itself. Recently, several auxiliary promotion methods, either promoting the activity of reagents or enabling optimized adsorbate—catalyst interactions, have been proven as viable strategies to enhance catalytic reactions. Apart from static enhancement effects, they in principle also allow for spatially and temporally variable modifications of catalyst surfaces. While some of those methods have been demonstrated, some are only theoretically predicted, opening exciting avenues for future experimental advances. Besides fundamental descriptions and comparisons of each activation method, in this perspective we plan to provide examples for the applications of those techniques for a variety of catalytic reactions as diverse as N 2 and CO 2 hydrogenation as well as electrochemical water splitting.
