Umar ibn al-Khattab was one of the earliest figures in the history of Islam. While Sunnis regard Umar ibn al-Khattab in high esteem and respect his place as one of the " Four Righteously Guided Caliphs ", the Shia do not view him as a legitimate leader of the Ummah and believe that Umar and Abu Bakr conspired to usurp power from Ali. Shia believe that the Sunni view of Umar was created by the later Umayyad dynasty to honour the man that gave power to the first Umayyad ruler and third Sunni Caliph , Uthman. In this way, it gives legitimacy to Umar's consultation that started their own dynasty. Shia believe that the Umayyad view was propagated with lethal force and heavy duress and as time went on, that view became predominant and eventually taken as truth, cemented by the works of Bukhari.

I believe the book is very thorough in its coverage and wide in its scope. I gave it 4 stars and not 5, because the book can be improved with professional editing. Best book i have read so far on life of Hazrat Umar ibn-al khattab R. The 2 volume book gives us a detailed insight in the life of Hazrat Umar covering all periods of his life from his days of ignorance to him embracing Islam and finally leading the Islamic state after being chosen the second caliph of Islam.

The author has done a remarkable job of researching about the second caliph, as we do not have a vast number of literature on him especially in English. In times like these, how much the Islamic states could do with his stern teaching of equality and justice. JazakAllah to the author for all his efforts. This is a Great book. So influential! A must read , especially for the youth!

Children of Islam

In the times of ignorance, Umar made his living as a broker. Shibli, his biographer, says that in his youth he grazed camels. When Muhammad proclaimed his mission, many people acknowledged him as the Messenger of God. Umar acknowledged him as Messenger of God after six years. Some historians claim that Umar was a most awe-inspiring man, and when he accepted Islam, the idolaters were gripped with fear for their lives. But this is only a case of a dominant myth being in conflict with ugly facts. When Umar accepted Islam, the idolaters remained where they were, and nothing changed for them; but it was Muhammad who was compelled to leave his home, and had to find sanctuary in a desolate ravine.

His life began in a time of ignorance and ended during the Golden Age of Islam. Under his leadership, the Muslim world was witnessing some of its most notable conquests in the history of Islam. The series faced large controversy [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] due to its depiction of Omar, Abu Bakr , Uthman and Ali , the four Rashidun Caliphs , [11] along with other characters, who some Muslims believe should not be depicted, much like Mohammad. The series consists of 31 episodes and was originally aired in the month of Ramadan since July 20, After the series was broadcast on MBC, it was dubbed into several languages for international broadcast [15] [16] [17] and subtitled in English on YouTube ; it received great support from many different scholarly bodies and people watching it. The series starts with one of the pilgrimage of caliph Omar where he delivers speeches to the pilgrims. The next scene comes with an exploration on Mecca of the caliph where he emotionally flashbacks to his own 18 year's life when he was a young boy working for his rude father Khattab ibn Nufayl. The flashback perspective of Omar shows all the past story of his life from when he was a wrestler, a businessman and above all one of the leaders of the Quraish, and then to his life after his conversion into Islam being one of the closest companions of Muhammad and an immensely devoted believer, a brave inspiration for all the contemporary Muslims and a bold warrior in all the contemporary Islamic battles.
